The History of Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan

The Banke Bihari Temple is a Hindu temple located in the town of Vrindavan, Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple is dedicated to Banke Bihari who is believed to be the combined form of Radha and Krishna. Banke Bihari was originally worshipped at Nidhivan, Vrindavan. Later, when Banke Bihari temple was constructed around 1864, the icon of Banke Bihari was moved to new temple.

The history of Banke Bihari Temple is closely linked to the life of Swami Haridas (Lalita Sakhi in Dvapara Yuga), a guru of the famous singer Tansen. Once at the request of his disciples Swami Haridasji sang the following verse in Nidhivan, Vrindavan:

Mai ri Sahaj Jori pragat Bhai Ju rang ki gaur Syam ghan damini jaisen. Pratham hun ahuti ab hun aagen hun rahihai na tarihai taisain.. Ang ang ki ujraii sugharaii chaturaii sunderta aisain

Translation:

My simple couple has appeared, O brother! They are like a dark rain cloud and a fair moon. I offer my first oblation to them. Now and henceforth, they shall remain here. They are so beautiful, with their limbs well-proportioned and their faces charming.

After singing this verse, Swami Haridas saw a vision of Radha and Krishna. The next day, he found a black stone idol of Radha and Krishna in the same spot where he had seen the vision. He installed the idol in a small temple and began to worship it.

The temple soon became popular and attracted devotees from all over India. In 1864, a new temple was built to house the idol. The new temple is a beautiful example of Hindu architecture and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vrindavan.
