Due to Increasing Drug use and Trade in Punjab

Punjab is struggling with drug smuggling and increasing drug consumption, although there has been a partial reduction in it in the last few years, it is not being controlled. Today, about 15% of the people in Punjab consume drugs, which is a huge figure. The concern is that women are also involved in this. There are some fundamental reasons due to which the government's efforts have failed.

1. Smuggling from the Neighbouring Country: Punjab lies on the Pakistan border and there is smuggling of drugs from across the border in which the youth and farmers of Punjab are also involved and they earn money from this. The government of neighboring country Pakistan promotes this and the innocent people of Punjab get trapped in its clutches.

2. Profit in Drug Trade: The drug trade runs illegally from Pakistan and Afghanistan and its links are connected to Canada. This includes big criminals who raise funds through illegal business and use it for crime and separatism.

3. Network of Drug Addicts among Themselves: A study has shown that there is a network of drug addicts among themselves. If any drug addict faces a shortage of money, then he includes a new partner in his gang so that his work can continue through him. In this way, new addicts are formed and once trapped in its clutches, it becomes very difficult to get out.

Efforts Made for De-addiction: The government keeps running drug awareness campaigns from time to time. The state government has constituted a Special Task Force (STF), which includes intensive search operations, increasing patrolling in drug-affected areas and making strict narcotics rules.

Apart from this, the government has ordered to open de-addiction centres in rural areas.
